Camping in the Davis Mountains

Summer is here!  We decided to kick ours off with a trip to Davis Mountains State Park with some good friends.  We set off after church on Sunday to get our campsite set up.  The campsite was nice and shaded and had plenty of room for our group's three tents and a hammock.

We had five adults and four kids with us, so I was pleased that we all fit on one site.  The hammock was an afterthought, but ended up being a huge hit with the kids!

After a delicious dinner of chicken and fried rice cooked on the camp stove (no fires due to the burn ban), we set out on a sunset hike up the Indian Lodge Trail.  We made it high enough to get a view of the beautiful West Texas sky before turning around and heading back down.

Wondering about the dinos?

Monday was filled with breakfast tacos, a nice, three-mile hike, and swimming in the pool at Balmorhea State Park.

The pool was amazing!  It's a huge, spring-fed pool in the middle of the West Texas desert.  The number of people allowed in each day is limited (thankfully we had our day passes purchased in advance!) so there was plenty of room to have a nice swim.  The kids (5-8) all loved the fact that there were fish and turtles swimming in the pool with them.  L was a little afraid of the "tickly fish" but ended up having a great time swimming anyways!

Tuesday was an easy day of packing up and saying goodbye.  We took a quick hike along the ridge between the skyline trail and the outlook before heading home.

Camping is always fun, but it's better when you have excellent people camping with you.  I enjoyed spending time with my friends from high school and J and L loved getting to know and play with their kids!

The Davis Mountains provide a lovely getaway close to home and adding Balmorhea to the mix made it even better!
